Feel, function and perform better
Remedial Massage Therapy is a soft tissue therapy involving direct contact on the muscles, tendons and fascia (connective tissue). As a remedial massage therapist, I require an accurate anatomical knowledge, good palpation skills and the ability to recognise variations in different tissues (abnormal or not). I’ve been a remedial massage therapist for 10 years and strongly believe that such a therapy can play a major role in allowing ones body to feel, function and perform the best it can.
Remedial massage involves direct contact on the skin usually using oils or creams. It is an effective treatment for invigorating your body’s ability to remove toxin build up, for calming your peripheral nervous system to ease pain, it can help to relax muscles to improve joint mobility, and to correct poor posture and improve your movement efficiency.
I employ various techniques to identify dysfunctions and to locate and repair damage to muscles, tendons and joints. The techniques employed will depend on your reason for the remedial massage treatment and will be discussed with you at the beginning of the session. Such techniques include:
- Conducting a physical assessment – this allows me to identify any original postural and biomechanical dysfunctions which may be contributing to your pain/discomfort and therefore enables them to treat the cause of your pain as well as symptoms. Range of motion (ROM) and flexibility testing are also commonly undertaken during a physical assessment.
- Trigger point therapy
- Transverse Friction – used to enhance blood supply to an area and break up adhesions between muscle fibres that are causing restricted mobility
- Mobilisation – this allows me to treat deep, short, inaccessible soft tissue (ligament, capsule etc)
- Myofascial Release
- Muscle Energy Technique – a method of assessing and correcting skeletal alignment
- PNF stretching – effective for increasing the range of movement (ROM) around a joint, decreasing muscle tension, improving muscle relaxation by improving blood flow and restoring the resting length of the muscle
Conditions I treat with Remedial Massage:
- muscle tightness and pain
- arthritis
- frozen shoulder
- tennis elbow
- whiplash
- neck and back pain
- scoliosis and other postural conditions
- headaches
- sports injuries and more
After the session I will discuss with you a treatment plan, which will include information on the number and frequency of follow up treatments, as well as advice on rehabilitation exercises (exercises to help you overcome your injury) and/or Corrective Exercises (exercises that aim to strengthen weakened parts of your body in order to prevent future injuries occurring) as well as general health information.
